THE BEVERLY BUSINESS CLIMATE

Beverly
Hospital
500 Cummings Center
The City of Beverly has
undergone a remarkable regeneration in the past several years with the
development of the Cummings Center, the former United Shoe Machinery property
with 1.6 million square feet of commercial real estate on a 70 acre riverfront
campus housing an office and R&D complex, which is now the address of over 400
Beverly businesses. Tax incentive financing allowed this abandoned factory site
to become a spectacular economic success in the City, and a very attractive
business location.
Beverly’s thriving downtown area is an attractive commercial area hosting
restaurants, clothing, art and other boutique-retail establishments, as well as
many service-related businesses. The past two years have seen the establishment
of “Beverly Main Streets”, an exciting collaboration of business people,
residents and the City, working together to promote and enhance Beverly's
downtown economic vitality, cultural and historic resources, and quality of
life. Beverly Main Streets’ goal is to make the downtown a fun place to visit,
shop, eat and live, by recruiting appropriate new businesses, rehabilitating
existing buildings, and expanding parking.
Vision and perseverance are not new in Beverly. In 1928 the Beverly Chamber of
Commerce and the Beverly Aero Club established the Beverly Airport, which was
later taken over by the City of Beverly, and today accommodates single and
multi-engine planes, jets and helicopters, from small aircraft to large
corporate planes providing us with a unique economic and environmental resource.
Surrounding this resource is the City’s fastest growing commercial area, along
the newly created Sam Fonzo Drive, which has quickly become the desired location
for the headquarters of several multinational corporations.
North Beverly, Beverly Farms, Ryal Side and other areas throughout the City have
smaller commercial zones, appropriate for the needs of those neighborhoods.
We are a community that boasts many third and fourth generation businesses,
which speaks volumes on the entrepreneurial spirit of the Beverly business
community. In the 21st Century, the economic climate throughout New England and
the nation is facing challenges. The businesses in Beverly know that they have a
strong advocate and ally in their Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber works
diligently with elected representatives and City officials to ensure that those
officials understand the needs of business and the many benefits brought to the
community by the businesses located here.
